Tony gripped the edge of his desk and watched his last class of the day close bags, whip out cell phones, and join the river of students in the hallway. He wanted to sit down, but wasn’t sure whether he would be able to get back up again. Fumbling in his pack, he pulled out the Percocet and a bottled water. He took a whole tablet. Mac would give him a lift home, he didn’t have to drive, and he was so sore he couldn’t even get excited at the thought of seeing Mac again. Well, not in that way anyhow.
He leaned on the wall, waiting for the medication to kick in. He was still uncertain about how a relationship with Mac was going to work. He had always dated men who were out. He loved doing things together, watching a movie or a show and having a better time because your boyfriend was enjoying it too. He liked to walk in a park or down a street in the right neighborhood and let his shoulder brush against the man beside him and feel that closeness. Sure, there were times and places where he had kept a cool distance from a boyfriend, playing straight, but he hated that. Could he do it all the time, in exchange for a private lover? He wasn’t sure.
He wondered what Marty would have told him. Marty was a romantic and big on relationships. He had pushed Tony to find someone new and move on after Luke. He had even pushed Tony at Mac that one night, seeing something Tony himself hadn’t recognized. But Marty hated when people were in the closet. He used to say that if every closeted queer came out at the same time, the world would have to give them equality. People could discriminate against a small minority of strangers. They would feel different if they found out their mechanic and their banker and the woman in the corner store and their favorite cousin were all gay. So would Marty say grab the relationship or stay out of the closet?
And the fucking bastard didn’t stick around for me to ask him. Tony felt tears on his cheeks and raised a hand to rub them away. It had to be the meds, making him so emotional. He pushed off from the wall. Mac had called at one o’clock to say there was a break in the case and he might have to send someone else to see Tony safely home. That would be all he needed, having some uniform come in his door and find him weeping like a nellie queen.
The phone on his desk rang as he considered surrendering to his chair again. Tony answered it.
“Tony Hart.”
“Tony, it’s Mary Pinski.” The woman’s voice was strained. “I’ve discovered something…odd, that I think you should see.”
“If it’s to do with Brian Westin, you should call the cops,” Tony said. The last thing he wanted to do right now was trek down to Pinski’s classroom and back.
